With kind permission of the McKay Family
The McKay brothers (above) made an immense contribution to the development of piobaireachd in New Zealand, in performance, teaching and administration. Comunn na Piobaireachd (NZ) invited pipers globally to compose a piobaireachd in their honour. The prize for the winning composer is NZ$1,000.
Iain MacDonald from Regina, Canada won the competition with his fine tune Salute to Sir Ian and Neville McKay. You can view his brand new piobaireachd by selecting the new piobaireachd in this website's menu.
Congratulations Iain. The competition had 15 other competitors with 7 Kiwis and 9 from overseas including: Andrew Edwards, Brendon Eade, Bruce Omundsen, Campbell Wilson, James McHattie, JD Ingraham, John Dew, Joseph Morrison, Marion Horsburgh, Niall Matheson, Roddy McLeod, Sean Somers, Warwick Johnson, Willie Rowe and Zygmunt (Allan) Gray.
The Judges were Murray Henderson (CNP Patron), Iain Hines (CNP President) and Donald McKay (son of Sir Ian).
The quality of the tunes submitted was outstanding.
On behalf of the Society committee, we would like to thank the entrants for their commitment to this project and we hope that it has been personally a valuable and rewarding experience.
Our mission is to support the playing of piobaireachd in New Zealand by running piping seminars, teaching and organising solo piping competitions.
